We
need to choose our leadership for the next school year.

WHAT ARE THE
STEPS? According to our bylaws:
1. We as a group elect, by plurality vote, a committee to nominate PTA
board officers: president, treasurer, secretary. The election shall be by
ballot on Monday 15th April 8-8:30 a.m.
2. 3 people are voted onto the committee. The “alternate” is the runner up
nominee.
3. The committee presents a report 7 days before the election, by Friday
26th April.
4. We hold an election for president, treasurer and secretary - PTA members
not nominated by the committee can nominate themselves, or be nominated, from
the floor on election day. Friday 3rd May, 8-9 a.m.
NOMINATING
COMMITTEE – IMPORTANT POINTS
Who can be part
of the nominating committee?
Any PTA member
who is:
•
Willing to take on the role.
•
Nominate and elect by the PTA
membership. Appointment is not an option. The school principal does not serve
on the committee unless elected to do so.
•
Represents the social, geographic and
ethnic makeup of the association.
•
In attendance on Friday 12th April
8-8:30 a.m. / Monday 15th April 8-8:30 a.m.
What does the nominating committee do?
•
They determine the future of the PTA
board.
•
They review the leadership qualities
and people skills of current members.
•
They nominate 1 candidate for each
office on the PTA board: president, treasurer, secretary.
•
They follow bylaws and procedures (parliamentarian
manages).
•
They treat all candidates in a fair
and consistent manner and make all decisions by majority vote.
•
In the event the Nominating Committee
cannot secure a nominee, nominations from the floor shall be called for at the
election meeting.
•
They prepare a written report. Make
report public according to bylaws of our PTA at least seven days before the
election meeting.
•
They keep nomination conversation
confidential.
THINGS FOR THE NOMINATING COMMITTEE TO
CONSIDER:
1. They need to review all sections of the bylaws and standing rules
relating to officer and board member duties. We have the following current
officers:
•
President
•
Secretary
•
Treasurer
2. They solicit suggestions for nominees from the membership, current board
members and staff.
3. They give careful consideration to qualifications of candidates,
choosing the best person for each position.
All nominees for officer should be:
•
Knowledgeable about and adheres to
the Vision, Mission, Purposes and basic policies of our PTA.
•
Willing to attend continuing training
for PTA and complete a background check.
•
Have prior experience in
organizational work.
•
Ethical and has a sense of justice
and fairness.
•
Be able to maintain confidentiality.
•
Exhibits enthusiasm for our PTA.
4. Individuals currently serving in a position are not automatically allow
to repeat in that position. Each officer can serve up to 2 year in one office
if re-elected.
The following People are currently serving till the end of this school
year:
• Ben Martinez, treasurer
since Nov 2018
• Habiba Noor, Secretary, since
June 2017
• Cat Solis, parliamentarian, since Nov 2018 (appointed not elected).
• Rebecca McMains,
President, since October 2018.
5. If the need arises please ask a committee member who is being considered
for a position to leave the room during the discussion regarding his or her
qualifications. That committee member can be present for the discussion of
other candidates for that office and may vote.
6. The committee contacts prospective candidates during the committee
meeting explaining the duties as outlined in the bylaws, standing rules and as
reported by the current board members. If you are unsure about a position, ask
the Parliamentarian for clarification or the person currently serving in the position.
7. Please allow time for a candidate to consider the position before asking
for his or her decision.
8. They treat all candidates in a fair and consistent manner.
9. They need to select one nominee for each officer position, and be
prepared to state qualifications of nominees. In the event the committee cannot
secure a nominee for a position, it remains “open” and the
president calls for nominations for that position from the floor at the
election meeting.
11. Committee decisions need to by majority vote.
12. They reconvene the committee if a slated candidate withdraws between the
publicizing of the committee report and the election meeting.
